I used to be a sweater person. My mother knitted one for me every winter when I was growing up here, using patterns her own mother taught her, cream with black polka dots, golden yellow cuffs, and big brown buttons. I wore them sledding, to school, to every Christmas program at church. I thought everyone’s mother did that.
